How to Install OpenWrt on Netgear Nighthawk X4S (R7800)

The Qualcomm IPQ8065 Performance Champion

The Netgear Nighthawk X4S (R7800) remains one of the most capable Wi-Fi 5 routers ever manufactured, boasting a 1.7GHz dual-core Krait CPU and dedicated network subsystem (NSS) processors for line-rate NAT and packet handling.

Standard Web GUI Flashing Method

  1. Download openwrt-ipq806x-generic-netgear_r7800-squashfs-factory.img.
  2. Log into Netgear Genie web GUI at 192.168.1.1 > Advanced > Administration > Router Update.
  3. Upload the factory.img file and accept the non-Netgear firmware warning.

TFTP Unbricking & Firmware Recovery

If flashing fails, Netgear includes a hardware TFTP listener on boot. Set your PC to static 192.168.1.10, hold Reset while powering on until the power LED blinks amber, and push the image via tftp:

tftp 192.168.1.1 -m binary -c put openwrt-factory.img
