How to Install & Upgrade Clean OpenWrt on GL.iNet Routers (Beryl AX, Flint 2, Slate)

Stock GL.iNet OS vs. Pure Vanilla OpenWrt

GL.iNet routers (like the Beryl AX GL-MT3000 and Flint 2 GL-MT6000) run a customized OpenWrt fork with a proprietary UI. While user-friendly, power users often prefer Pure Vanilla OpenWrt to receive rapid upstream kernel updates, pure LuCI, and clean package repositories.

Method 1: Direct Web Upgrade via GL.iNet Admin Panel

  1. Download the official OpenWrt sysupgrade.bin for your model from firmware-selector.openwrt.org.
  2. Log into GL.iNet web GUI at 192.168.8.1 > System > Upgrade > Local Upgrade.
  3. Upload the sysupgrade.bin file, uncheck "Keep Settings", and confirm the flash.

Method 2: U-Boot Failsafe Web Recovery (The Unbrick Method)

If your router enters a boot loop or rejects stock uploads, GL.iNet includes a built-in hardware U-Boot web recovery server:

  1. Power off the router. Connect your PC to the LAN port.
  2. Set your PC's IP address manually to 192.168.1.2 with subnet 255.255.255.0.
  3. Press and hold the physical Reset button while plugging in power.
  4. Hold for 5 flashes of the LED (about 6 seconds) until the LED turns solid white/blue, then release.
  5. Open your browser and navigate to http://192.168.1.1. Upload your OpenWrt firmware and click Update firmware.
